Disturbing Mail Targeting Dentists in Washington
WSDA has learned that several Washington dental offices have recently received deeply disturbing messages through the U.S. mail. These notes include messages suggesting that suicide rates among dentists should be higher. (Some media coverage of this situation is available here.)
Any dentist who has received one of these messages should immediately contact local law enforcement, so that the person or persons behind this threatening behavior can be identified and apprehended.
We also encourage anyone who has received one of these messages to please let WSDA know immediately by replying to this email. Your safety and the safety of your staff is our top priority. If you or a member of your staff are in need of immediate mental health support, please contact the 988 Lifeline by calling or texting the number 988. Additional wellness resources for dentists can be found at ada.org/wellness.
We urge you to use extreme caution in dealing with any suspicious mail or packages and to talk with your office staff about this incident as well. Because this is an active investigation, we are limited in the details we can share. However, we will try to provide additional information as appropriate.
Thank you to those who made us aware of these disturbing messages. Our dental community is strong, and as your Association, we are here to provide support in dealing with this unusual and difficult situation. Dentists and your teams are important and valued, and we know you do incredible good for your patients and in your communities.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to WSDA with any additional questions or concerns at info@wsda.org. We will continue to update you on this situation when we have more information to share.
Thank you,
Dr. Chris Dorow
