Last week, Governor Jay Inslee signed Engrossed House Bill (EHB) 1074, “Tobacco 21,” into law.
EHB 1074 raises the legal age to purchase tobacco and vapor products from 18 to 21. This law, which goes into effect January 1, 2020, provides an effective strategy to fight tobacco use in our state. Tobacco use has been proven to harm oral health outcomes. And, unfortunately, about 95% of adult smokers start before the age of 21.
The passage of this legislation was a priority for WSDA this session. Thank you to all of the WSDA members who joined us on Dental Action Day to advocate on behalf of our profession’s legislative priorities, including EHB 1074.
